“Responding to the vernacular of existing buildings and to the remarkable qualities of the surrounding landscape”

Montgomery Sisam’s winning design proposal for the new Lakefield Dining Hall captures the iconic essence of the Lakefield campus. It is robust and enduring in character, responding not only to the vernacular of existing buildings but also to the remarkable qualities of the surrounding landscape.

The new dining hall is a prominent and visible addition to the campus with a strong indoor-outdoor connection. Conscientious of and crafted to facilitate pedestrian flow, servicing, and rental opportunities, it anchors the sports field to the south and brings renewed focus to the existing stepped courtyard to the east. Roof overhangs provide shade and/or tempered light to the exterior commons while clerestory windows allow for the penetration of natural light and ventilation into the depth of the interior dining space. Finally, expansive windows across the façade offer unfettered views of the picturesque campus grounds.

As part of this project, Montgomery Sisam was engaged to redevelop the old and valued dining hall into a new purpose-built Science Centre. The facility’s plans remain largely unchanged; each room is enhanced to meet new programmatic needs, and the mezzanine is adapted as a collaborative work space for students, profiting from picturesque views and an abundance of natural light. Already a major circulation hub on campus with walkways above and below ground, the new Science Centre also introduces a new central corridor leading through the new pavilion and into the new dining hall.

Reprogramming the old dining hall will also provide residual space in the academic wing to be subsequently converted into classrooms, a drama space, and multimedia production studio.
