“An innovative design that leverages the potential of current infrastructure, maximizing efficiency and improving sustainability”
As part of an intensive two-year redevelopment initiative, Humber College is reallocating 100,000 sq. ft. by way of 47 projects to better meet the growing needs of its North Campus. Montgomery Sisam, in association with Architecture Counsel, was contracted to design and deliver one of the largest stages of this redevelopment. Renovations to the School of Applied Technology respond to a pressing need for additional and better quality spaces dedicated to this department’s many varied programs. In consultation with Humber College, Montgomery Sisam established key functional requirements and features to prioritize and develop an innovative design of academic space that leverage the potential of current infrastructure, maximizing efficiencies and improving sustainability. The largest component of this project was the adaptive reuse of an existing library building into faculty offices, meeting rooms and collaborative spaces – co-locating many academic programs within the same building, including interior design and design foundations, architectural technology, engineering technology and landscape technology. As a whole, modest, sensible, calculated moves afforded increased office accommodations, new, flexible, technology enabled classrooms, makerspaces, workshops, and a chemistry lab. In order to maximize value for the college, these incremental improvements are forward-thinking, with highly flexible and adaptable platforms that lend themselves to organic and ongoing transformation. Spanning multiple floors across 4 campus buildings, renovations to the School of Applied Technology were completed on an incredibly tight time line. Complex phasing and decanting strategies allowed the College to limit disruption and maintain as much usable program space as possible during construction.
