“Eliminating the stigma of the mental health complex through community integration.”
The design for this major redevelopment project in downtown Toronto was selected as the winning entry in an international design competition.
The proposal consists of a large 1.2 M sf. health care facility which is designed as a number of buildings spread across an existing 27 acre site, integrated with a wide range of non-hospital buildings. The intent of the design is to eliminate the stigma of the mental health complex by integrating it into the community. The buildings strive to emulate what is best about the older fabric as well as more recent contemporary buildings which are infilling the neighbourhood. Ample natural light and garden courts are integrated into all of the buildings to create a humane and meaningful setting for both clients and staff.
