“A bold design and new identity for an innovative cross-disciplinary program ”

Formerly the Life Sciences Research Building, the newly redeveloped Advanced Research and Innovation in Smart Environments (ARISE) building accommodates the uses of Health Technologies, Information and Communications Technologies, Knowledge Integration, and Clean Technologies programs.

Only the main structural components of the Life Sciences Building – floors, retaining walls, bearing walls, columns and roof structure – are retained. These are fortified to accommodate a vertical addition of two and a half stories. ARISE now offers 60,000 square feet of program spaces with informal gathering and reception spaces on the ground floor and purpose-built academic space on levels 2 through 5. Operating on a heavily sloped site, the newly renovated building welcomes students arriving on the North Side from University Drive with enhanced pedestrian walkways and a new, at-grade Main Entrance to the fourth floor. The existing grade-level entrance to the ground floor on the South side has been retained, with sloped landscaping and a new plaza along the West side mediating between the upper and lower condition.

The character of the building envelop offers a new identity and renewed visibility to ARISE within the larger campus. The building skin is a combination of stone, ceramic fritted glazed aluminum curtainwall and a (Muntz) copper metal panel system. The metal panel system will evolve in appearance over the life of the building - beginning as a bold golden yellow but darkening with time to achieve a darker bronze finish. Together with the frit, the metal panel system is easy to maintain and energy efficient, while retaining a high degree of transparency along the south façade and engaging views of the Rideau River. This panel system is cost effective, light in weight and quick to install, forestalling the need for any structural modification and appropriate to the projected 30 year life span of this addition.
