Montgomery Sisam begins work on the concept design for the Innis College Renewal and Expansion project

Montgomery Sisam has joined members from the Innis College Community, the Faculty of Arts and Science and the University Planning Department to develop a direction for the future of the 1974 building, Innisians call home.

Home to three popular academic programs – the Cinema Studies, the Urban Studies and Writing and Rhetoric, Innis College has enjoyed significant growth in enrollment over the last four decades. The College building at 2 Sussex Avenue, designed to serve a student population of 800, is now home to nearly 2,000 and draws students from across the campus to its many varied courses.

The concept design aims to remedy this space crisis, imagining a new path forward for Innis College, one that is both reflective of the College’s legacy and supportive of its future. It will consider additional offices and classrooms, an expanded Innis Café and food server, as well as a new library hub. Key design drivers include improving circulation, expanding green space, increasing informal study and social space for students, and managing sensitive neighbourhood conditions in and around this tight urban site.

The study is projected to conclude this spring.
